Short answer: if your budget is short and customers find you by searching nearby, start with a free Google Business Profile. Add a website when you need a page you own for email, ads, WhatsApp links or a bilingual form. Many Puerto Rico shops get their first steady calls from Maps before they pay for hosting.

What does a Google Business Profile give you for free?
Google lets local businesses create a profile that shows on Search and Maps: name, hours, phone, photos, reviews and a short description. Google's own help center explains how to create and manage a Business Profile. There is no monthly fee for the profile itself.
For a salon in Bayamón, a plumber in Caguas or a clinic in San Juan, that free card is often the first place a neighbor taps "Call". Photos, recent reviews and correct hours matter more than a polished slogan. If someone searches "open now" near them, Maps is where they look.
What the free profile does well:
- Shows you when people search your service + a town or "near me".
- Puts your phone one tap away on mobile.
- Collects reviews you can answer in public.
- Works even before you own a domain.
What it does not replace:
- A page you fully control for long guides, price lists you update weekly or bilingual SEO.
- A clean landing URL for Google Ads or Meta Ads.
- An email footer link that is not a long Maps URL.
- Forms that send leads into your CRM or WhatsApp automation.
When is the free Google profile enough?
You can wait on a website when most of these are true:
- People already search for what you sell nearby. Dentists, locksmiths, auto shops and restaurants fit this. Impulse or visual products (jewelry, event décor) often need ads or social first, not only Maps.
- Your main goal is phone calls or WhatsApp, not online checkout.
- You can keep hours, photos and reviews updated every week. A stale profile loses trust fast.
- You do not yet run paid ads that need a landing page you own.
Google's SEO starter guide still reminds owners that a helpful site supports search, but it does not say every business must launch a custom site on day one (SEO Starter Guide). For a brand-new colmado or home service, a complete Business Profile plus consistent NAP (name, address, phone) across directories is the higher-ROI first week.
If you have no storefront, you can still set up a profile as a service-area business. We covered that in Google Business Profile without a storefront in Puerto Rico.
When should you add a website next?
Add a website when at least one of these becomes true:
- You want to run ads. Google Ads and Meta Ads work better with a page you control, fast load times and a clear form. Sending paid traffic only to a Maps card wastes budget.
- You need bilingual pages. A profile has one description box. A site can have full English and Spanish URLs. See bilingual web design.
- Email and WhatsApp need a short link. Campaigns and signatures need a clean URL, not a Maps deep link.
- You sell more than one service and want a page per service so search and AI assistants can cite you.
- You care who owns the asset. Your domain and hosting stay yours if the designer leaves. A profile is still Google's product; follow their rules or risk suspension.
A website has two costs: building it and keeping it running. We break that down in how much a website costs in Puerto Rico. If the monthly keep-alive cost is unclear in a quote, ask before you sign.
How do you choose the order on a short budget?
Use this simple order:
- Claim and finish the Google Business Profile this week. Categories, service areas, 10 real photos, hours, WhatsApp or phone, and ask three happy clients for reviews.
- Match your NAP everywhere (Facebook, directories, invoices). Inconsistent data is a common reason AI answers skip you.
- Only then buy a domain and a starter site when you need ads, email links or bilingual service pages — or when Maps alone cannot explain what you sell.
- Skip fancy features on v1. One home page, services, contact form and clear CTA beat a half-finished store.
If you already have a weak site and an empty profile, fix the profile first. A broken website linked from Maps can hurt more than no website.
What mistakes waste money first?
- Paying for a 10-page site before the Google profile has photos or reviews.
- Running ads to a Facebook page or a PDF instead of a fast page you own.
- Hiding the phone number on the site while Maps shows a different number.
- Letting a vendor keep the domain login so you cannot move later.
- Translating the whole site with a tool and calling it bilingual SEO.
