Spring cleaning your digital presence: a 5-step guide

You do not need a new brand to clean this. You need an afternoon and a willingness to click the things customers already click.

Five steps. No software purchase required.

1. Click what Google still shows

Search your name plus the town. Open the results that look like you. If any of them 404, you are paying with reputation for a page that does not exist. Write the URL down. Either restore the content or redirect it to the real replacement, not to the homepage.

This is the mess we inherited on this domain after the Wix move: old /post/ URLs still ranking while the new site was live. Fixing them one by one is the work. Ignoring them is how a good article becomes an error page with impressions.

2. Open the Google Business Profile as a stranger

Photos, hours, phone, website field. The website field is the one people skip. It has to be the live site, not a leftover Wix URL, not a Facebook page, not a typo. Hours that still say last year's holiday will lose the Saturday call.

3. Send yourself through the contact path

From a phone that is not yours, fill the form or tap the number. Confirm it arrives. Confirm a person would answer. A pretty contact page that does not deliver is a closed shop with the lights on.

4. Kill leftover ads and leftover offers

Log into the ad accounts. If a campaign still points at a URL that 404s, turn it off. If a landing page still names a service you stopped, take it down or rewrite it. Paid traffic to a dead page is the most expensive version of this list.

5. Pick one page that is still true and make it easier to cite

One service page with a clear answer, current proof, and a next step. That is more useful than ten thin posts. If you want that page to show up when someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI, the GEO work starts with a page that is already honest, not with a new tool.

Then stop for the year, unless you move platforms again. In that case, start at step 1 the week of the move, not three months later.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I do this?

Once a year is the minimum. After a website move, a rebrand, or a staff change on the phone, do it that week. Those are the moments when a 404 or a dead form quietly replaces the live business.

I am not technical. Can I still do the URL check?

Yes. Search your business name, click the results that look like you, and see if the page loads. For a list of old URLs, Google Search Console's pages report is the honest source if you have access.

Should I delete old posts?

Only if they are wrong or embarrassing. Thin posts that still answer a real question can stay. Posts that teach a tool you no longer use, or a price that is false, should be updated or redirected, not left up as if they were current.

What if I moved off Wix and old links still rank?

Redirect each old URL to the real replacement. Do not send everything to the homepage. That reads as a soft 404 and you lose the ranking either way.
